Walking along the streets of Pershing Avenue and 28th Street, between Upas Street and University Avenue, in North Park, San Diego, provides a glimpse into a historic way of building and living. Rows of hand-crafted bungalows, inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement of the early 19th century, can be found intact and well maintained. One of the primary considerations given to these quaint structures are the front porches, which are often found tucked behind large ornate columns. These porches, to this day, are highly sought after spaces that are utilized to relax and engage with the neighborhood.
“Mismo”, the Spanish word for same, intends to provide a comparable approach to these timeless homes, albeit within the framework of modern housing needs. The driving design element of the 8-story concrete building is a two-story angled column that repeats around the entirety of the structure. While the column design remains consistent in size and shape, it flips and rotates, responding to different building conditions such as sun exposure and interior living space, creating a purposeful and dynamic presence. In the end, however, it serves the same purpose as those decorative columns of the adjacent historic homes, creating comfortable “porches” that are utilized to relax and engage with the neighborhood.
